Product Ideas

Image
I came up with a map of potential ideas for products I could make and sell. This is of course not even half of what truly could be done so this brainstorming will continue for a couple of weeks into this project.  The ideas I like the most at the moment are  - bookmarks -book end - metal posters and other wall art - stickers  I'm going to continue to develop my ideas and then revisit this and think about what would work well with my ideas.  I think we are likely to see a lot of people do prints, which are very popular but if I am going to do prints too I need a way of making them stand out beside loads of others either through the art itself or the way they are made. Luckily I haven't seen anybody else's work look even a tiny bit like mine in theme and so hopefully the audience I am going for is going to find me. Items that nobody else is likely to make is also a great idea because they will stand out by default. I'm very intrigued by this book end idea.

Logos & Branding

Image
Today we were asked to start thinking about logos and possible branding for our illustration.  These are some really quick ideas I came up with in my sketchbook #1 / #1.1 - I often make comics or small animations based on this very simple character design, I tweak the character only very slightly to depict each person. I like the silly and sloppy nature of it and plan to do more in the future so I thought he could be a cool little mascot for my illustration. #2 - name on a palette  #3 Self portrait in my blocky digital style #4 I am known for animal portraits and so I thought a really goofy looking one could be a cool idea, highly stylised, would be digital as this is how I do them #5 Splash with the name inside, this is super basic and a bit cliche  #6 Hard to see from this sketch but its the character again holding a pencil on his upper lip, this could be quite a fully little logo  Rough digital renders of the first few ideas I still don't really know what my brand identity is a

Illustrating the characters based off their descriptions

Image
As a way of beginning my visual research I thought a good place to start would be by illustrating the characters of the story based off the descriptions which I wrote down as I was listening to the audio book. This gave me a starting point for development. Quite a basic character , not very recognisable as a time traveller based off description alone. Full body exploration, starting to think about things like pocket watches and other small trinkets that could hold relevance to this story and the general theme.  In context the Eloi should look very unusual but as single illustrations I do worry that people would not know what they are or are meant to be. The morlocks design is the most striking and will definitely give a monster feeling to anything I add them to even if the viewer doesn't know the story of the time machine.  This has been a really useful starting point as now I have some visual reference in my head that isn't taken from other peoples interpretations. TIME MACHINE- initial research and Ideas

Image
Time Machine- HG Wells HG Wells has been one of my favourite authors for some time; his works such as war of the worlds, the first men in the moon and time machine have intrigued me to no end so when I saw that I could use this source material for this project I jumped at the chance. There were other texts that I enjoy in the list, Frankenstein and Animal farm for example; but what separates them from time Machine is that they are so explored already for one and for two they are based on more realistic concepts. For example, farm animals already exist and we know what they look like and frankensteins monster may not exist but hes made up of human parts- time machine as I will get into later is based off speculative science, therefore there is no correct way of illustrating it.  I have started with compiling illustrations I have found that have been done previously, some I feel represent what I picture when I read the text and other I think miss a lot of elements that I don't want
