Fair and final thoughts

Image
The fair went really well, I put my socials up so people could follow me and they did! I also wrote clearly what the prices were so people knew straight away.  The fair was a great success. My total costs for the stock were £70 My takings for the day were £150 , so that makes £80 profit and stock to spare! The coasters were very popular and I took some orders even after they sold out which I am now fulfilling.  I was concerned that because my posters were more expensive than other peoples that they wouldn't sell but I sold the majority and made a good profit so Im glad I stuck with that.  The bookmarks didn't sell at all , not a single one, but that is ok I will try to sell them at other things and won't make anymore as they are not popular- lessons learned!  I now know that I can sell things at a professional quality and I know what people liked and can make more of those. Final thoughts on this project: In this project I have learnt so much, more so than I have in almos

Prints final outcome

Image
My prints turned out really well. I have wrapped them in plastic from the art shop. Unfortunately the plastic is not the biodegradable kind. This was because I couldn't find any anywhere for an affordable price, it would have taken me out of budget and just wasn't possible at this time. Each print has a sticker inside the packet and a bookmark  I made 11 prints in total as this was all I could afford. I went and checked out available paper types and discussed with the print team what papers were best. I tried on matte and glossy and chose to go with glossy.

Bookmark final outcome

Image
My bookmarks turned out pretty well. They are quite basic and just a rectangle but I think they are a nice little addition. I will sell them for a very affordable cost.  If I had more time I would have made them a custom shape but I think for the intended purpose this is simple and sleek.

Bookmarks

Image
I also want to make bookmarks so I started by doing an initial design (rough)  I decided to only develop the morlock one because I don't think the eloi one is as recognisable to an audience. I then developed this design digitally and used a previous design for the back as a time saving method.  Back Front

Business card outcome

Image
I printed these on a bit of a budget and just used some 25p card from the art shop and printed this with inkjet but I'm happy with the results. This will be a good way of getting my name out there and for people to be able to find me online. I will hand these out to whoever shows an interest or buys something.

Stickers final outcome

Image
My stickers turned out great. I wish I'd made them a little bigger but other than that I'm happy with the result. One of these will be included with every purchase.

Coasters final outcome

Image
The final outcome of my coasters! I think these turned out really well, I made 12 of them in total 3 of each design. The level of detail that I was concerned about seems to not be a problem but only just , I think any more detail would be too much and ideally these designs  would work best on larger surfaces.

Prints

I have gone ahead and developed my sketches into finished designs ready for printing! I really didn't want to waste the work I put into designing this despite not being able to use it for the book end idea. However, I really dislike how it turned out. I don't think it showcases my ability as an illustrator. I also don't think this is going to appeal to many people. I am therefore ending this ones development here as I feel I have exhausted what I wanted from it. This poster is one that you can see my design for in earlier posts. I am incredibly pleased with how it turned out. I tried to create a very epic feeling and I also experimented with using more textured brushes so that it had a kind of 3D effect. I think there will be a lot of people interested in this. It also maintains a narrative element with the man in there for scale so that those who do get the reference will be pleased too. This is going to be printed using Inkjet.  This is the first time I'm showcasing

Coasters

Image
It is a huge shame but the book end will not be going forward. I went to speak to the wood shop about possibly buying some wood from them to use for the base but we ran into a lot of issues. He said that yes he could sell me some wood but it would be unfinished and I was not allowed to use their facilities to finish it because I had not been trained to do so. There didn't seem to be any option to have a workshop to learn. Buying the wood elsewhere was just going to cost far too much money considering my budget is practically non existent at this time.  I am determined not to let this be a waste however and since I have taken the time to learn how to engrave I am still going to do so in the form  of coasters! I can purchase finished coaster bases for £1 each and then engrave them  These designs that I have created are to be engraved onto the coasters. My only concern is that since I have limited experience with the laser engraving I am not sure if these images might be too detailed

Learning to Laser engrave

Image
I attended a workshop to learn how to laser engrave as this is a process I have never done before. It was really really cool and is probably my new favourite bit of kit at the university. I produced this book end in the workshop.  The team running the session provided a template for the base and then we selected images and learn how to use a cut line and an engraving line.  Please note the images engraved on this are taken from the internet. There was not time for me to use my own designs and so the part I am responsible for is just the composition of the images and the idea of having them that way.  This was a really insightful and fun and taught me a lot. I am very keen to use the laser cutters for at least one product at the fair.

Cover Design for book end idea

Image
I have produced this design for the potential design to go on the front of the book end that I am proposing to make. It's very rough and needs lots of work but the general idea still stands. I wanted the design to be like a classic monster poster and so I did some visual research to see what these typically look like and then designed my own. The monster is my morlock design and the usual damsel in distress is one of the eloi. The inspiration for the background with the sphynx comes from the book too as this is the kind of architecture that they have.

Book end

Image
My most ambitious product is the idea of doing a book end. My idea was to create a right angled wooden base and then create a model that can be 3D printed and attached to the base. The design was going to be as if the Giant crab was climbing up the side of your books, here is a simple illustration to demonstrate. Unfortunately, after going to speak to the 3D printing guys to ask about the process and the cost I found that on my current budget this simply wasn't going to be possible, not even just the one product even. The crab itself was going to cost £30+ to 3D print and that would be assuming I only had to do the one attempt which with something complex is a risk. Then I would also need to invest in the wood base and although this would be a smaller cost it was still not going to be possible because I would have no money left. I am aware I could have created models by hand and just make a few but to be honest I was concerned that I would not have time to do this now after spendi

Riso Print design

Image
With this development of a previous idea I wanted to try to take more advantage of the risographs capabilities and the overlapping that it can do. I don't think the yellow shows up very well so Ive been thinking of changing this to green but I am still unsure.  Following a 1-1 with Matt it was brought to my attention that the text take away from the illustration. This is because its too thick of a line in comparison to the very fine line of the drawing. If I am going to take this through to production I need to play around with this text a little more and make the piece a bit more coherent.  It is also my plan to create versions of this using the Riso by shifting the layers on some of them to create some that are more offset than others; this I am hoping will produce an array of results and make the product feel more limited to the customer. I need to make sure in this case that the text isn't right on the edge of the page because then when I offset a layer it will be cut off
